Yeah, L4D didn’t make it into the mentions due to its reliance on co-op. It’s intense, but its difficult to be truly freaked out when your mates are yammering down the headset.
It was a real toss-up between silent hill 2 and Eternal Darkness for 3rd place, but ED relied too heavily on frequent flow-breaking menu screens and tedious magic management (that forced the player to suspend disbelief a little too much) to be considered ’scarier’ than SH2. It’s still a damn fine piece of software. Damn that bathtub!
…which makes me wonder whether it’s not our traditional labels of “casual” and “hardcore” that’s changing- it’s the turn “gamer” ITSELF.
Video games (of all kinds) are becoming a normal part of life. Old, young, frat, nerd…EVERYONE has some contact with video games, even if its on their phone or a game of minesweeper. Maybe the whole concept is changing?
…or you can’t accept that the Wii simply isn’t for you, and fancy taking things off topic. Save it for ‘Wii on Trial’ season, fella! I agree, though- It’s turning non-gamers into casual gamers, and casual gamers into Xbox 360/PS3 owners…and hence hardcore gamers. It is making the whole concept a lot more mainstream though…
Let me be blunt. Fable 2’s godawful voiceovers sound like a blend of Stephen Fry, Lawrence Olivier, Morgan Freeman and the bird of the M&S ads compared to Turtles in Time. The turtles all have the same script- and there’s only one line for each situation! You’ll hear the phrase “Ooer, I’m feeling seasick” EVERY DAMN TIME you get knocked down…and don’t get me started on the sewer level.
I just wish the combat wasn’t so much fun. Then I could actually hate it rather than lament its wasted potential.
Not sure I’d agree with your metaphor though- thought the film was more like 2 hours of INCREDIBLE shrumpdown followed by your metaphorical jock pulling out just before you climax, quickly jerking himself off and saying “well, you’ll have to wait for the next session.”
I can’t believe the deluge of swine flu games…I’m still not sure enough time has passed for it to be funny yet! Then again, if you can laugh at it, anyone can.
As a die-hard fan, you’ll probably get a kick out of galactrix for a while- but don’t be surprised if you find yourself playing warlords after getting sick and tired of the leapgates or losing a 30-minute battle through random chance!
Yeah, I call that Clerks 2 syndrome. I love that film to bits but can only bring myself to watch it once a year! With quirky films like ND, you’ve gotta forget a few details before you find it funny again.
Yeah, it was shite- but it WAS innovative. It’ll go down as one of those brave experiments that sucked out of all control! After all, it’s equally important to know what game mechanics DON’T work as well as those that do!
Yeah, let’s keep the off topic Ninty flaming in the forum, shall we? Nintendo’s just identified a gap in the market that’s more profitable than actually MAKING GAMES…
Actually, SEGA (with the exception of Sonic Team) is historically one of the few developers who actually keeps making new stuff- they’re not afraid to try something even if it doesn’t work. Which makes me wonder whether this might just the appetizer for a soon-to-be-revealed next gen Outrun.
Oh, and EA syndrome? Last year EA released a Mirrors Edge, Dead Space, spore, rock band and the best FIFA ever…it’s starting to worry me that the industry’s biggest laughing stock for predictability is actually innovating more than Ninty…
Haha, yeah- the fact that they have an excellent sense of humour bodes really well for SS Forever! Hopefully a little bit will carry through into the game (but nowhere near as much as the embarassing SS2!).
Halloween Special: The 5 Scariest Games...EVER.
October 30th, 2009 at 1:30 pmGood list- I’m glad we agree on 4 out of 5!

Halo 3: ODST
October 11th, 2009 at 11:10 amGood game and good review. Yeah, the campaign’s fun while it lasts (if a bit easy)- but firefight’s the real draw. Fucking buggers!
Not sure whether ODST will keep me away from Halo 3 SP/ Horde mode for long, though. Still gotta find the last couple of audio logs, mind.
Developer Interview: Zombie Cow Studios
October 11th, 2009 at 11:05 amHaha, great to see a homegrown developer bringing the humour back to adventure games!

Turtles in Time: Reshelled (Summer of Arcade XBLA Review)

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
August 5th, 2009 at 1:48 pmGreat review, made me laugh a whole bunch.

Fallout 3: Broken Steel
May 9th, 2009 at 2:07 pmWell…no. It’s more of the same- and that’s the point. If fallout left you cold then Broken Steel won’t win you over.
Anchorage might.
Puzzle Quest: Galactrix

Orbital Decay
May 4th, 2009 at 5:08 pmI got a massive kick out of Orbital Decay. Don’t get me wrong, hard mode kicked my ass but hard- but it’s well worth the play.
Napoleon Dynamite
April 27th, 2009 at 10:40 amYeah, I call that Clerks 2 syndrome. I love that film to bits but can only bring myself to watch it once a year! With quirky films like ND, you’ve gotta forget a few details before you find it funny again.
Outrun Online Arcade (XBLA/PSN review)

Space Mutants from Space
April 20th, 2009 at 6:39 pmEven 90,000’s pretty easy after you work out the attack patterns of Level 15’s boss.
I got a real kick out of this game- then again, I think it just reminded me of Atomic Tank…
The Spirit
April 18th, 2009 at 7:56 amI didn’t hate this movie. I still don’t know whether or not I liked it, but i’d recommend you go see it.
It’s IS a comic book, rather than a film.
